Blue Tees Rangefinder Battery: CR2 or Rechargeable? Series 2, 3 Max, 3 Max+ and 4 Ultra

The Blue Tees rangefinder battery depends on the model. The Series 2, Series 2 Pro / Pro+, original Series 3 Max and Series 4 Ultra each take one replaceable CR2 3-volt lithium cell behind a battery door. The Series 3 Max+ and the Captain Pro have a built-in lithium-ion battery that you charge over USB-C and cannot replace yourself.

Quick check: a small door on the body means a CR2; a USB-C port with no door means rechargeable. Below is the battery for each Blue Tees model, sourced from Blue Tees’ help center and manuals. It covers how to change a CR2, how to charge a Max+, what low-battery symptoms look like and what to do when the unit still will not work.

Key facts

  • CR2 3V lithium: Series 2, Series 2 Pro / Pro+, Series 3 Max (original), Series 4 Ultra. Blue Tees’ own troubleshooting pages say "Replace (CR2-3V) battery if needed."
  • Built-in rechargeable: Series 3 Max+ (3.7V/1,000mAh lithium-ion, USB-C, 2–3 hours, about 50 rounds per charge per the manual) and Captain Pro (USB-C).
  • The Max+ battery is not user-replaceable; its manual says so in plain words.
  • Lost or broken battery door: Blue Tees support asks for a photo of the damaged part.

Only what Blue Tees or a retailer listing states is in the table. Blue Tees publishes no battery-life figure for its CR2 models, so that column says so rather than guessing.

Not on the list: the Captain Air. Blue Tees’ launch material for it does not state a battery type, so check for a door or a USB-C port before you buy anything. Every other golf brand is in the rangefinder battery finder.

Series 3 Max or Series 3 Max+? How to tell which battery you have

This is where most of the confusion comes from. The two look almost the same, but the original Series 3 Max runs on a CR2, and MyGolfSpy’s review FAQ says plainly that it is "not rechargeable and need[s] CR2 batteries". The Series 3 Max+ is the rechargeable version. Blue Tees’ product page lists its battery as "USB-C Rechargeable" and the box includes a USB-C to USB-A cable.

  • A USB-C port and no battery door: Series 3 Max+. Charge it; do not order batteries.
  • A battery door and no USB-C port: original Series 3 Max. It takes one CR2.
  • Still unsure: check the model name on the box or your order confirmation. Blue Tees’ help center has separate sections for the Series 3 Max and the Series 3 Max+.

Some shopping listings still mix the two up, and older reviews only describe the CR2 version. Trust the port or door on your own unit over a listing.

How to change the battery in a Blue Tees rangefinder (CR2 models)

These steps come from Blue Tees’ Series 4 Ultra instructions and apply to every CR2 model in the table. You need one CR2 3-volt lithium cell.

  1. Open the battery door. On the Series 4 Ultra Blue Tees says to unscrew it; on other models, open the battery compartment cover.
  2. Take out the old cell. Note which way round it sat before you remove it.
  3. Strip the plastic wrap from the new CR2. Blue Tees’ setup steps start with this, and a cell still in its wrap is a common reason a new unit appears dead.
  4. Insert it flat (negative) end first, so the positive end faces the door.
  5. Refit the door and close it securely. Snug is enough; do not force it.
  6. Press the power button and fire at a target to check you get a reading.

Which CR2 to buy: any name-brand 3-volt lithium CR2 fits, and the brands are compared on capacity and cold rating in our best CR2 battery for a rangefinder guide. Do not swap in a CR123A; it is longer and will not fit (see CR2 vs CR123A). Do not use a rechargeable RCR2 either, which typically runs at a higher voltage than a 3-volt CR2.

How to charge a Blue Tees rangefinder (Series 3 Max+ and Captain Pro)

The Series 3 Max+ manual describes a "non-removable, built-in lithium-ion battery" rated 3.7V/1,000mAh, charged through a waterproof USB-C port.

  1. Use the supplied USB-C cable and any standard USB port on a computer or a USB wall adapter; Blue Tees says either works.
  2. Charge for at least 2 hours before first use. The manual’s safety section says 2–3 hours; Golf Galaxy’s spec sheet gives 2–3 hours for a full charge.
  3. Read the light: solid red means the battery is below 10% or charging; solid white means fully charged (per the manual).
  4. Charge in the right temperature. The manual’s charging range is 0–45 °C (32–113 °F); operating range is −5 to 45 °C (23–113 °F).

Two things surprise owners. First, the battery indicator in the display only appears when the battery is low, according to Blue Tees’ help center, so a missing icon is normal and not a fault. Second, the battery cannot be replaced at home: the manual states "The battery is not replaceable." A Max+ that no longer holds a charge is a warranty or service matter, covered in rangefinder repair and warranty. The Captain Pro works the same way; Blue Tees’ launch release lists a "USB-C rechargeable battery".

How long does a Blue Tees rangefinder battery last?

For the Series 3 Max+, the manual quotes about 50 rounds of golf, or 5,000+ actuations, per charge; Golf Galaxy lists "~50+ rounds". That is a full season of weekly golf before you need the cable, though cold weather and long scan-mode use will cut it.

For the CR2 models Blue Tees publishes no figure. As a reference, other makers quote CR2 life in the same range: Precision Pro says about 50 rounds for its NX9, and Bushnell says to replace the battery at least every six months. A CR2 only works when you press the button, so most golfers get months from one cell. Keep a spare in the bag; lithium CR2s keep for years in their packaging.

Low-battery symptoms on a Blue Tees rangefinder

Blue Tees’ own troubleshooting pages for the Series 2 Pro+ and Series 4 Ultra name two battery symptoms:

  • The unit will not turn on or the display stays dark. Check the battery is in the right way round and not low, and replace the CR2 if needed.
  • The display goes blank when you fire the laser. Blue Tees says the battery is "either weak or low quality"; fit a new one.

Other signs owners report on CR2 rangefinders generally: a dim display, readings on close targets but not long ones, and several presses per reading, all worse on cold mornings. On a Series 3 Max+, a low-battery icon in the display or a red charging light means it is time to plug in.

Blue Tees rangefinder not working after a battery change?

  1. Check the wrap and the direction. Plastic wrap off, flat end in first.
  2. Try a different, name-brand cell. Blue Tees blames a "low quality" battery for units that shut off when firing.
  3. Warm it up. Blue Tees warns the device will not operate outside its approved temperature range, so a unit from a freezing car trunk may need time in a pocket.
  4. Hold the button and keep fingers off the lenses. Blue Tees’ ranging tips: keep the power button pressed, hold steady, and keep fingers clear of the objective lens.
  5. Do not open the body. Blue Tees says never to disassemble the rangefinder; unauthorized disassembly voids the warranty.

If it still fails, work through the wider checks in rangefinder not working before contacting Blue Tees.

Blue Tees rangefinder battery cover lost or broken

Blue Tees’ help center article on a missing or damaged battery door asks owners to send a photo of the damaged part through its contact page so support can help. It lists no part numbers or prices. Stopgaps and the case that keeps a door from popping open in the bag are on the Blue Tees rangefinder case page.

Blue Tees rangefinder battery FAQ

What battery does a Blue Tees rangefinder use?

It depends on the model. The Series 2, Series 2 Pro / Pro+, original Series 3 Max and Series 4 Ultra take one CR2 3-volt lithium cell. The Series 3 Max+ and Captain Pro have a built-in lithium-ion battery charged over USB-C.

How do you charge a Blue Tees rangefinder?

Only the rechargeable models charge: plug the supplied USB-C cable into the port on a Series 3 Max+ or Captain Pro and into any USB port or wall adapter. Blue Tees says to charge a new Max+ for at least 2 hours; a full charge takes 2–3 hours. CR2 models do not charge.

How do I change the battery in my Blue Tees rangefinder?

Open or unscrew the battery door, remove the old CR2, strip the plastic wrap from a new CR2 3-volt lithium cell, insert it flat (negative) end first, and close the door securely. The Series 3 Max+ has no user-replaceable battery.

Is the Blue Tees Series 3 Max rechargeable?

The original Series 3 Max is not; it uses a CR2. The Series 3 Max+ is rechargeable over USB-C with a built-in 3.7V/1,000mAh lithium-ion battery. A USB-C port with no battery door means you have the Max+.

How long does a Blue Tees rangefinder battery last?

Blue Tees quotes about 50 rounds (5,000+ actuations) per charge for the Series 3 Max+. It publishes no figure for its CR2 models; most golfers get months from one cell because the laser only fires when you press.

Why does my Blue Tees rangefinder turn off when I press the button?

Blue Tees says a unit that goes blank when firing the laser has a weak or low-quality battery. Fit a new name-brand CR2, or charge a Series 3 Max+ fully, and try again.
